Iran Claims Successful Interception of US-Made RQ-11 Raven Drone

Ramshir: Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced it had successfully shot down a US-made RQ-11 Raven reconnaissance drone in the southwestern city of Ramshir, Khuzestan province. This incident occurs amidst escalating tensions between Tehran and Washington.

According to Anadolu Agency, the IRGC stated that the AeroVironment RQ-11 Raven was "intercepted and destroyed" using an advanced air defense system that is part of Iran's integrated air defense network. The RQ-11 Raven is recognized as a lightweight tactical reconnaissance drone designed for surveillance, reconnaissance, and intelligence-gathering missions. It is produced by the US company AeroVironment.

The IRGC's statement highlighted the drone's capabilities, noting that it can transmit real-time images during both day and night to a ground control station. With an operational range of approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) and an endurance of 60 to 90 minutes, the drone is employed for target reconnaissance, battlefield monitoring, battle damage assessment, and tactical support. The IRGC further emphasized the drone's widespread use by the US military and other countries, citing its lightweight, portable design and rapid deployment as factors contributing to its success as a small military drone system.

The US military has not yet responded to Iran's claim. The situation underscores the heightened tensions between the US and Iran, particularly over the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Despite a Pakistan-mediated memorandum of understanding aimed at de-escalating hostilities and promoting a lasting peace agreement, both nations have continued to engage in retaliatory actions.
