Iran: Iran's football federation chief announced that the national team is preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but its participation hinges on receiving concrete assurances from FIFA. Mehdi Taj, speaking to state broadcaster IRIB, emphasized the need for guarantees to prevent issues similar to a recent incident in Canada.

According to Anadolu Agency, Taj mentioned plans for the team to hold a training camp in Trkiye after a short break, before heading to the tournament. He highlighted the necessity of a meeting with FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Secretary-General Mattias Grafstrom to secure assurances against entry restrictions or perceived disrespect, particularly towards Iran's state institutions.

Taj clarified that the team has no issues with the United States and emphasized their qualification for the World Cup. He stated, "Our host is FIFA, not any specific country." Iran is also planning two friendly matches in Trkiye and one in the United States ahead of the tournament.

These remarks followed an incident where Iranian football officials returned home without attending the FIFA Congress in Canada, despite holding valid visas. Taj and Secretary-General Hedayat Mombeini traveled via Trkiye to attend an Asian Football Confederation meeting and the FIFA Congress, but were denied entry upon arrival.

Iranian media reported the incident as politically motivated, while Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand suggested it might not have been intentional. FIFA later expressed regret and planned a separate meeting with Iranian officials.

This situation arises as the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico in June. US officials assured that Iranian athletes should not face restrictions, though some accompanying individuals might be affected. The FIFA president confirmed Iran's expected participation, noting the team's qualification for the tournament.
