Iran Introduces Bill to Regulate Transit Through Hormuz Amid Tensions

Tehran: An Iranian lawmaker announced on Tuesday the submission of a new bill to the parliament aimed at regulating transit through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway that has recently been a point of military contention with the United States.

According to Anadolu Agency, Ebrahim Azizi, head of the parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, highlighted the timing of the bill's submission, which coincided with the downing of US drones. Azizi's statement, shared on the US social media platform X, emphasized Iran's commitment to defending its strategic interests in the region, particularly concerning the management of the Strait of Hormuz.

Azizi stated, "This is the first step; subsequent measures are forthcoming," underscoring the seriousness of Iran's stance as tensions continue to escalate. The announcement comes amid recent exchanges of attacks between Iran and the US over the vital maritime passage.

The development follows a memorandum of understanding signed last month between Washington and Tehran, which aimed to establish a ceasefire as a precursor to a more comprehensive peace agreement. However, US President Donald Trump declared the memorandum "over" last week, further straining relations between the two nations.
