New York:Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that Iran could reopen the Strait of Hormuz within a week if the United States accepts a plan conveyed through Qatar.
According to Anadolu Agency, Araghchi made this statement while speaking to reporters in New York during the 81st UN General Assembly. He specified that the seven-day timeline for reopening the strait would commence once Washington accepts the proposal.
Araghchi outlined that the plan involves the US taking certain unspecified steps within the first four or five days, which would enable the strait to reopen by day six. He added that talks between Tehran and Washington on a final agreement would begin on day seven.
The foreign minister highlighted that the steps required from the US are already part of a memorandum of understanding signed in Islamabad in June. He emphasized Iran's readiness to finalize a deal to reopen the strait, contingent upon US willingness.
Araghchi reiterated Iran's commitment to ensuring safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz but accused the US of hindering the agreement's implementation through military actions. He stated that while Iran remains open to diplomatic efforts, it seeks credible assurances against future US attacks before engaging in further negotiations.
