Tehran: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced that the memorandum of understanding with the United States will serve as the 'cornerstone' of Iran's future foreign relations. Speaking on the social media platform X, Pezeshkian emphasized the unity of the Supreme National Security Council in crafting the agreement, highlighting its importance for the country's strategic direction.

According to Anadolu Agency, the memorandum, a result of Pakistan-mediated negotiations, was initially signed in June following a ceasefire agreement in April. The aim was to end the ongoing military conflict and establish a long-lasting peace. Despite its collapse last month due to renewed hostilities, Pezeshkian remains optimistic about its significance in ensuring regional security and alignment with allies.

The recent escalation saw the United States engage in an intensive 13-day bombardment of Iran in response to attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, attributed to Tehran by Washington. Iran countered with missile and drone strikes targeting Gulf nations housing US assets. In light of these tensions, US President Donald Trump revealed on Truth Social that he had called off a military strike against Iran. He cited requests from Iran and other Middle Eastern countries, including Israel, to allow for further peace negotiations.

Trump also mentioned that preliminary agreements were reached on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and addressing Iran's nuclear activities, marking a potential path toward resolving the conflict.
