South korea: South Korea on Sunday experienced its hottest day in modern history, with temperatures reaching a staggering 42.5C (108.5F), the state weather agency announced.

According to Anadolu Agency, this unprecedented temperature is the highest ever recorded in the country since modern weather observations began on the Korean Peninsula in 1904. The Korea Meteorological Administration reported that the record-breaking temperature was registered in the southeastern city of Yangsan, approximately 310 kilometers (192 miles) southeast of Seoul, shortly after midday.

Yangsan has endured temperatures exceeding 40C (104F) for five consecutive days, prompting concerns that the temperature might climb beyond 43C (109.4F). Meanwhile, Gyeongju, located about 240 kilometers (151 miles) southeast of Seoul, also saw temperatures rise to 40.2C (104.4F) for the first time this year.

In response to the extreme heat, the government activated a Level 2 emergency operation of the disaster response headquarters to enhance the nation-wide response efforts. Prime Minister Han Seong-sook issued urgent directives for government ministries and provincial governments to intensify safety checks on the individuals most susceptible to the heat and to ensure a stable supply of power and water.
