Iran-US Negotiations Continue Amid Rising Regional Tensions

Doha:Negotiations between Iran and the United States are ongoing as regional tensions rise, according to Majed al-Ansari, a spokesman for the Qatari Foreign Ministry. Speaking at the Global Security Forum in Doha, Ansari noted that both sides are actively engaging in discussions, despite a challenging environment.

According to Anadolu Agency, Ansari expressed hope that these negotiations would lead to an agreement, though he warned of the risk of escalating conflicts. He emphasized the importance of addressing regional tensions to avoid a broader conflict that could extend beyond the region's borders.

The ongoing discussions follow a failed attempt to use a ceasefire as a basis for negotiations, which ultimately broke down. Ansari highlighted the need for a comprehensive approach to defuse multiple conflicts simultaneously, particularly in areas like Yemen, where tensions with Iran are intertwined with local dynamics.

Ansari also raised concerns about political statements from Israel, cautioning against using regional instability for domestic political purposes. He criticized the lack of a peace partner in Israel, stating that current Israeli political discourse focuses on conflict rather than peace.

Since October 2023, Israel's actions in Gaza have resulted in the deaths of over 74,000 Palestinians and injuries to more than 175,000 others, with significant damage to civilian infrastructure. Ansari underscored that successful mediation relies on trust in the negotiation process rather than trust between parties.

The remarks come amid ongoing hostilities between Saudi Arabia and Yemen's Houthis, with mutual military actions heightening tensions. Concurrently, diplomatic efforts between the US and Iran remain stalled following their military confrontation.
