Accra:The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) announced on Tuesday that it is maintaining its operations to support peace and stability as the UN Security Council evaluates strategies for the period following the end of its current mandate on December 31.
According to Anadolu Agency, UNIFIL is dedicated to its mission authorized under Security Council Resolution 1701. This involves monitoring developments, reporting violations to the UN Security Council, coordinating with involved parties, supporting the Lebanese Armed Forces, and facilitating humanitarian missions.
UNIFIL was originally established in 1978 following Israel's invasion of southern Lebanon. Its mandate was significantly expanded after the 2006 conflict, under Resolution 1701. In August 2025, the UN Security Council decided to conclude UNIFIL's mandate on December 31, 2026, with plans for a gradual and coordinated withdrawal over the subsequent year.
