Iranian Container Ship Sinks After Naval Mine Explosion in Strait of Hormuz

Baku:Tehran A container ship carrying over 2,500 containers sank in the Strait of Hormuz after hitting a naval mine, according to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy. The incident occurred as the ship attempted to navigate through an unauthorized route in this critical maritime passage.

According to Anadolu Agency, the IRGC Navy reported that the vessel caught fire after striking the mine and eventually sank south of the Strait of Hormuz. Authorities have warned local vessels and fishermen to exercise caution in the area due to floating containers from the sunken ship.

The incident is part of a series of maritime challenges in the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran has implemented restrictions on commercial shipping, including specific transit routes and the requirement for IRGC Navy authorization. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) also reported two separate incidents of container ships being struck by unidentified projectiles in the region, sustaining minor damage and no casualties.

Iran's recent enforcement measures since April require vessels to coordinate with the IRGC Navy before transiting the Strait. The ongoing maritime tensions are set against the backdrop of strained relations between Iran and the United States, with navigation rights through this strategic waterway a focal point in negotiations.
