Tehran:Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has issued a warning regarding potential new targets and weapons, specifically highlighting the presence of major undersea internet cables running through the Strait of Hormuz. This development comes amid ongoing tensions with the United States.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, IRGC spokesman Hossein Mohebbi emphasized the strategic importance of the seven major internet cables beneath the Strait of Hormuz, noting that all internet and commercial data traffic passes through them. Mohebbi announced that new targets and weapons would soon be unveiled, underscoring Iran's strategic capabilities.
During a ceremony at Tehran's Sacred Defense Museum, Mohebbi reiterated Iran's intent to expel what he termed as the remnants of US power from the region. This stance was echoed by Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, who recently mentioned the possibility of targeting undersea internet cables, data centers, and artificial intelligence facilities connected to the US in the event of another conflict.
The backdrop to these tensions includes a confrontation that began on February 28, when the US and Israel launched military actions against Iran. In retaliation, Tehran carried out missile and drone attacks and closed the Strait of Hormuz. The situation prompted the US to impose a naval blockade on Iranian ports. Although a memorandum of understanding concerning navigation freedom in the strait was signed in June, its implementation has been delayed due to security disagreements.
