Iraq Commits to Preventing Use of Its Territory for Regional Attacks

Baghdad:Iraq has announced that it will not permit its territory to be used for launching attacks against Saudi Arabia or other countries in the region. This declaration comes amid recent condemnations of attacks targeting Saudi territories.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein communicated this stance during a phone call with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan. The discussion, as detailed by the Saudi Foreign Ministry, included Iraq's condemnation of recent assaults on Saudi areas and a rejection of harm to civilians and civilian infrastructure.

Hussein assured that Baghdad would not allow its land to be utilized as a base for actions that threaten the security of Saudi Arabia or other neighboring countries. In response, Prince Faisal bin Farhan reiterated Saudi Arabia's support for Iraq's efforts to mitigate regional tensions, emphasizing the significance of collaboration with neighboring countries to enhance security and stability.

The conversation also covered the enhancement of bilateral relations and cooperation, particularly in the realm of security. This follows Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi's recent meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Riyadh, where al-Zaidi condemned Houthi attacks on Saudi civilian targets and reiterated Iraq's opposition to the use of its territory for such attacks.

Additionally, in September, Saudi Arabia's East-West oil pipeline was reportedly attacked by drones originating from Iraq, resulting in casualties and damage. Subsequently, Saudi Arabia chose not to retaliate immediately, allowing Iraq time to address the issue. Iraqi investigations later identified the attack's origin as a site in the southern Maysan province.

Amid ongoing military tensions between Yemen's Houthi group and Saudi Arabia, the Iraqi government's commitment to preventing further incidents underscores the importance of regional cooperation in maintaining stability.
