Baghdad: The president of Iraq's Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has declared that the region will not engage in ongoing regional conflicts and will focus on supporting diplomatic efforts to alleviate tensions, as per an official statement.
According to Anadolu Agency, Nechirvan Barzani made these remarks during a phone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, where they discussed regional developments and bilateral relations. The KRG presidency reported on the discussions, highlighting the importance both officials placed on maintaining peace and stability.
During the call, Barzani emphasized that the KRG "will not be part of the conflicts" and will continue to act as a "factor of peace," supporting diplomatic initiatives aimed at reducing tensions and safeguarding the region's population from potential war threats. The leaders also underscored the need for border security to prevent actions that might destabilize the region or escalate tensions further.
According to Iran's Foreign Ministry, the conversation also touched upon regional developments and the consequences of military attacks by the US and Israel against Iran. Barzani conveyed condolences to Iran over the loss of lives in the attacks and reiterated the KRG's commitment to maintaining and strengthening friendly relations with Tehran.
Araghchi expressed concerns that the military actions had increased insecurity in the region, potentially leading to broader global ramifications. The dialogue also covered enhancing cooperation between Iran and the KRG, framed within the Iran-Iraq security cooperation agreement, with the intent of ensuring border security and preventing external parties from exploiting the region to create instability.
The ongoing conflict involves Israel and the US continuing large-scale attacks on Iran since Saturday, resulting in at least 926 casualties, including significant figures such as Khamenei and top military officials. In retaliation, Iran has launched drone and missile strikes targeting Israel and Gulf countries hosting US military assets.
