Golan heights: The Israeli army announced on Sunday that it had destroyed military sites in southern Syria, marking another breach of the country's sovereignty. A military statement specified that the army's 810th Mountain Brigade was responsible for demolishing several forward positions of the Syrian army located on Jabal al-Sheikh in the occupied Golan Heights. The military asserted that these sites "posed a direct threat to Israeli army positions" in the region.

According to Anadolu Agency, there has been no immediate response from the Syrian authorities regarding the Israeli attack. Damascus has consistently condemned Israel's ongoing violations of Syria's sovereignty and reiterated its commitment to the 1974 Disengagement Agreement signed with Tel Aviv. Israel captured most of the Golan Heights during the 1967 Middle East War and later annexed the territory, a move that has never been recognized by the international community.

Following Assad's fall in late 2024, Israel escalated its air campaign in Syria, targeting military sites, vehicles, and ammunition depots, which has resulted in the deaths of dozens of civilians. Additionally, Israel took control of the buffer zone in the occupied Golan Heights and declared the collapse of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement between the two nations.

Assad, who led Syria for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia in December, marking the end of the Baath Party's regime, which had held power since 1963. In January, a new transitional administration led by President Ahmad al-Sharaa was established in Syria.
