Tel aviv: Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz shared an aerial photograph that starkly illustrates the complete destruction of Beit Hanoun, a town in the northern Gaza Strip. The image, which Katz posted on X, reveals vast stretches of rubble and devastation, highlighting the severe impact of the ongoing conflict in the region.
According to Anadolu Agency, Katz accompanied the photo with a statement asserting that there is "no refuge for terrorism" following the destruction of Rafah and Beit Hanoun. The aerial image depicts a landscape of scattered ruins and destroyed buildings, showcasing the extent of the devastation that has befallen Beit Hanoun, a town bordering Israel's southern frontier.
Beit Hanoun was among the initial targets during Israel's ground invasion of Gaza, which began on October 28, 2023. Despite the prolonged conflict, now over 21 months since the war's onset on October 7, 2023, Palestinian factions continue to effectively ambush Israeli forces. This resistance has resulted in casualties and challenges for Israeli forces, highlighting the ongoing difficulties faced by Tel Aviv in achieving its military objectives.
The Israeli army confirmed the deaths of five soldiers from the "Netzah Yehuda" Battalion of the "Kfir" Brigade, with an additional 14 soldiers wounded, including two with serious injuries, during a confrontation in Beit Hanoun last Monday. An investigation by the army revealed that Hamas fighters had detonated explosive devices against a foot patrol in the area, followed by an engagement with machine guns.
In recent months, Beit Hanoun has been under Israeli military control, with warplanes and artillery targeting the area while army units conducted limited patrols. The town has recently experienced intensified airstrikes as part of a broader ground escalation, with reports last Tuesday indicating that Israeli forces had surrounded the town.
On June 2, 2024, the Municipal Emergency Committee in northern Gaza declared Beit Hanoun a "disaster area" due to the near-total destruction of infrastructure, vital services, and the worsening humanitarian crisis. Prior to the conflict, Beit Hanoun was home to approximately 60,000 residents and covered an area of 17,000 dunams.
Despite international calls for a ceasefire, Israel has continued its offensive on Gaza, resulting in nearly 57,800 Palestinian deaths, predominantly women and children. The sustained bombardment has devastated the enclave, causing severe food shortages and the spread of diseases.
In November of the previous year, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
