Israeli Lawmaker Ofer Cassif Convicted of Assaulting Police Officer

Jerusalem:An Israeli court has convicted Ofer Cassif, a lawmaker known for supporting Palestinian rights, of assaulting a police officer during an incident four years ago. In response to the conviction, Cassif declared, "Enough with the occupation."

According to Anadolu Agency, the Jerusalem Magistrate's Court delivered the verdict, though the implications for Cassif, a member of the Joint List, remain uncertain. The events leading to the conviction occurred during a demonstration in the southern Hebron area when Cassif attempted to drive his car to the protest site but was stopped by police officers.

The indictment, as reported by Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, detailed that after a verbal exchange, Cassif drove his car toward a police officer, striking the officer's leg. The situation escalated when Cassif exited the vehicle and struck the officer on the head.

Prosecutors argued that Cassif's actions were intentional, dismissing his claims that the vehicular impact was accidental and that the physical altercation was in self-defense.

Cassif, reflecting on the court's decision, remarked, "My conviction should come as no surprise to anyone, and certainly not to me personally." He also referenced efforts to prevent him from participating in the upcoming Knesset elections on October 27. He characterized the conviction as part of a broader political persecution against those opposing the occupation and advocating for democracy and peace. Cassif vowed to continue his advocacy, stating, "Enough with the occupation, enough with bloodshed. Yes to peace."
