Tel aviv: Israel's minister of settlements has sparked controversy by advocating for the expansion of the ongoing military operation in the Gaza Strip, even at the potential risk to Israeli hostages held by Hamas. Orit Strock, a member of the far-right Religious Zionism Party, emphasized the need for a more aggressive approach during an interview with the ultra-Orthodox radio station Kol Berama.

According to Anadolu Agency, Strock highlighted that approximately 25% of Gaza has been designated as off-limits by the Israeli army due to the presence of hostages, a figure provided by Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir. She argued that avoiding these areas would hinder the war effort and called for a "decisive battle" despite the potential risks to the captives.

When questioned about the possibility of harm to hostages during such operations, Strock acknowledged the risk but insisted on doing everything possible to minimize it. The Israeli army claims control over 75% of Gaza, though the United Nations estimates the controlled area to be closer to 14%.

Strock's remarks have been met with strong opposition from the families of the hostages. In a statement, they condemned her stance, accusing her of prioritizing an "endless, senseless war" over the safety of their loved ones and the foundational values of Israel.

Hamas has consistently offered to release the Israeli captives in a comprehensive agreement that includes an end to the war, Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, and the release of Palestinian prisoners. Despite this, Israel has continued its military offensive, rejecting international calls for a ceasefire. Since the conflict intensified on October 7, 2023, over 59,000 Palestinians, predominantly women and children, have been killed, resulting in widespread destruction, food shortages, and disease outbreaks in Gaza.

The situation in Gaza has drawn international legal attention, with the International Criminal Court issuing arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Furthermore, Israel is facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its actions in the enclave.
