Tel aviv: Israeli opposition leaders have strongly condemned the government's decision to occupy Gaza City, describing it as a politically motivated disaster that endangers lives and undermines the country's security.

According to Anadolu Agency, opposition leader Yair Lapid criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for yielding to the demands of far-right ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich. Lapid, who heads the Yesh Atid party, expressed concern over the Security Cabinet's approval of Netanyahu's plan to occupy Gaza City. He highlighted that the decision contradicts military and security advice, and warned of the potential consequences, including the loss of hostages, soldier fatalities, and a significant financial burden on Israeli taxpayers.

Lapid further cautioned that Israel could find itself in a prolonged, aimless occupation with no clear objectives. Meanwhile, Israeli opposition lawmaker Yorai Lahav-Hertzanu accused the government of endangering hostages and soldiers to appease the far-right ministers. He questioned the rationale behind the decision and urged for the immediate return of hostages and a halt to the conflict.

Avigdor Lieberman, leader of the Yisrael Beiteinu party, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that the Cabinet's decision disregarded professional military advice and jeopardized Israeli citizens' security for political gain. Similarly, Yair Golan, leader of the Democrats party, labeled the decision a multi-generational disaster, stressing the need to oppose the government's actions to prevent further loss of life.

Amidst the escalating conflict, Israel faces mounting international scrutiny. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes in Gaza. Additionally, Israel confronts a genocide case at the International Court of Justice related to its actions in the enclave.
