Beirut: The Arab League on Saturday issued a stern condemnation of the ongoing Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon, which have led to civilian casualties and jeopardize the fragile efforts to resolve the long-standing conflict and occupation issues between the two nations.

According to Anadolu Agency, Lebanon reported on Saturday that Israeli airstrikes have resulted in the deaths of at least 11 individuals, with 19 others injured, among them women and children, in the southern regions despite a previously established ceasefire agreement dated April 17. The Arab League’s spokesperson highlighted the attacks on civilians in Nabatieh and surrounding areas as a significant breach of Lebanon’s sovereignty and a severe escalation that threatens any ongoing peace negotiations.

The Arab League’s statement accused Israel of intentionally prolonging hostilities, obstructing diplomatic resolutions, and attempting to establish new ground realities that are deemed unacceptable. The statement also stressed the potential for broader confrontations unless the international community, with a particular emphasis on the United States, steps in to halt the Israeli military actions and enforce compliance with UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

The League reiterated its firm support for Lebanon, standing in solidarity with the nation and its citizens in resisting any assaults on its sovereignty, stability, and civil peace. The renewed aggression from Israel commenced early Saturday, with targeted airstrikes on residential areas in Ansar and Deir al-Zahrani, and the use of phosphorus munitions on the Ali al-Taher hill area.

Israel justified these actions as a response to an alleged offensive by Hezbollah in the same region. However, Hezbollah’s statement accused Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu of escalating hostilities to bolster his political standing and appease far-right factions within Israel.

This surge in violence occurs despite a mutual ‘framework formula’ agreement reached on June 26, aimed at facilitating a phased Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territories and paving the way for continued negotiations. The ongoing Israeli occupation spans various regions in southern Lebanon, with advancements into Lebanese territory exceeding 10 kilometers during the current offensive.
