Tokyo: A recent government poll in Japan revealed that Japanese people consider strengthening economic ties with the US a top diplomatic priority.
According to Anadolu Agency, the poll released Friday shows that people in Japan believe closer economic ties should be a top priority in diplomacy with the US, the Mainichi daily reported. The survey was conducted by the Foreign Ministry from February 3 to 9, involving residents aged 18 or older. It indicated that 52.1% of respondents consider 'economy, trade and finance' as key areas in which Japan-US relations should be strengthened. This was followed by 49.7% of participants who believe 'security, counter-terrorism, nuclear disarmament, and nonproliferation' should be prioritized.
When participants were asked if they perceived the security environment around East Asia as becoming more severe, a significant 81.5% selected either 'very much' or 'somewhat.' Of these, 57.4% expressed that Japan should enhance its cooperation with the US, Europe, and Australia to address the situation.
Regarding Japan's role within the United Nations, 40% of respondents suggested that the country should focus on reforming the UN, particularly its Security Council and General Assembly. This perspective was followed by 36.9% of respondents emphasizing the importance of Japan's involvement in peacekeeping operations.
