Kathmandu: A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal Saturday afternoon with no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
According to Anadolu Agency, the quake's epicenter was located in Dinggye, in China's Tibet region, approximately 55 kilometers from Sankhuwasabha in Koshi, Eastern Nepal. The tremor was felt across several parts of Nepal, including the Kathmandu Valley.
The earthquake occurred at 2.35 pm local time, as reported by an official from the National Seismological Centre in Kathmandu. The official noted that this quake was an aftershock from a recent earthquake in Tibet that also affected various parts of Nepal in January.
Nepal is situated in a seismically active region along the Himalayan fault line, making it prone to earthquakes. This vulnerability is due to the ongoing collision between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. The country has a history of significant seismic events, including a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake in 2015 which resulted in widespread destruction and loss of life.
