Damascus: Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) leader Mesud Barzani expressed his support for the recent agreement between the Syrian government and the YPG, operating under the name Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), during a call with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa.
According to Anadolu Agency, the Syrian Presidency announced that President Al-Sharaa and Barzani discussed recent developments in Syria during their conversation. President Al-Sharaa affirmed the state's commitment to the national, political, and civil rights of Kurds, emphasizing equality for all Syrians under the law.
Barzani conveyed his satisfaction with the agreement, stressing the necessity of implementing it in a way that ensures Syria's unity and stability. A statement from the discussion highlighted the importance of cooperation and joint coordination to effectively execute the agreement and contribute to stability in Syria and the broader region.
The Syrian government announced a comprehensive ceasefire and phased agreement with the SDF on Friday. This agreement involves an immediate ceasefire and a phased process to integrate military and administrative structures. It also includes the withdrawal of forces from contact lines and the deployment of Interior Ministry security forces to the city centers of Hasakah and Qamishli in northeastern Syria to promote stability.
The agreement aims to unify Syrian territory, enforce state authority, and advance full institutional integration through coordination and joint efforts to rebuild the country. Despite a previous ceasefire and integration deal signed on January 18, the Syrian government has accused the SDF of repeated violations. The latest accord follows a military operation by the Syrian Army that reclaimed significant areas in eastern and northeastern Syria after repeated breaches by the SDF of previous agreements.
