Latin Patriarch Warns of Rising Extremism in Israeli Society Amid Gaza Conflict

Jerusalem: Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa has expressed concern over the increasing traction of extremism within parts of Israeli society amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza. He highlighted a growing 'culture of contempt' toward Arabs and non-Jews, which he attributes to the influence of media narratives.

According to Anadolu Agency, in an interview with Italian daily Corriere della Sera, Pizzaballa discussed the atmosphere following the October 7, 2023 attacks and Israel's subsequent military actions in Gaza, which he believes have contributed to the rise of extremist rhetoric. The cardinal remarked that extremism is gaining ground in certain sectors of Israeli civil society, although he emphasized that it does not represent the majority.

Pizzaballa noted the troubling trend of contempt for non-Jewish communities, which he warned is becoming more visible in public discourse. He described this as a 'diseased germ' within society, amplified by media, and stressed the need to address it before it becomes a significant threat.

The patriarch also commented on the broader failure of political leadership and dialogue in the region, suggesting that the worsening violence reflects this issue. He called for addressing the situation within the framework of international legality without further victimization.

Pizzaballa criticized the growing reliance on military confrontation over negotiations, describing war as a 'new idolatry.' He noted that many people now feel dialogue is futile and that those with money and power can act without restraint.

On the topic of a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict, Pizzaballa offered a nuanced perspective, acknowledging the practical challenges while affirming the Palestinians' right to aspirations for statehood and dignity.

Finally, the cardinal condemned the use of religion to justify violence, labeling it as the gravest sin. He cautioned against allowing religious narratives to be dominated by extremists.
