Manila: The lower house of the Philippines' parliament on Monday impeached Vice President Sara Duterte, marking the second time in two years that the vice president has faced such proceedings. Duterte has been accused of graft and making public threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

According to Anadolu Agency, the 318-seat House of Representatives moved forward with the impeachment after its justice committee "found probable cause in the complaints" against the 47-year-old Duterte, who is seen as a strong contender for the 2028 presidential election. The impeachment case will now proceed to the Senate for trial, which could lead to either her conviction or acquittal, as reported by the Rappler News website.

In the voting process, 255 lawmakers supported the impeachment of Duterte, surpassing the number of 215 House members who had signed her impeachment complaint last year. Meanwhile, 26 lawmakers opposed the move, and nine abstained. Notably, at least 28 lawmakers chose not to participate in the voting. The House requires at least 106 votes to impeach a vice president.
