Nuuk: French President Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed France's and the European Union's support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Greenland during remarks to reporters at Nuuk Airport Sunday. Speaking alongside Danish officials shortly after his arrival, Macron emphasized France's solidarity with Denmark and Greenland in the face of growing strategic and environmental challenges in the Arctic.

According to Anadolu Agency, Macron described his visit as 'a great honor,' highlighting the need to address economic development, climate emergency, and education in Greenland. He also addressed concerns about efforts to undermine territorial sovereignty, condemning decisions like annexation attempts.

Macron stressed the importance of Denmark's and Europe's engagement in Greenland, a territory of major strategic importance. He also focused on international tensions over Iran's nuclear ambitions, urging for renewed diplomatic efforts and dialogue to prevent escalation in the region.

During his visit, Macron is expected to meet with representatives from Greenland and Denmark to discuss Arctic security, economic development, and climate change. He is the first foreign head of state to visit Greenland since US President Donald Trump expressed interest in annexing the territory, a proposal firmly rejected by Denmark and Greenland.

Greenland, a self-governing territory of Denmark since 1979, has significant strategic value due to its rich mineral resources. Both Denmark and Greenland have repeatedly rejected any proposal to sell the territory, with overwhelming opposition from Greenlanders. Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen has urged European nations to support the territory, asserting its governance by the Greenlandic people.
