Paris: French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday emphasized the urgency for the European Union to advance its 20th sanctions package against Russia, indicating that discussions on the new punitive measures are expected "in the coming days." Macron made these remarks during a meeting with Finnish President Alexander Stubb at the Elysee Palace, where discussions centered around Ukraine, Arctic security, and European defense.
According to Anadolu Agency, Macron outlined the importance of increasing pressure on Russia by moving forward with the sanctions package. He highlighted the need for a "total ban on maritime services for Russian oil exports" and the necessity of coordinated actions against Russia's "shadow fleet." Macron reaffirmed Europe's commitment to sustaining financial and military support for Kyiv, referencing commitments made at the latest European Council, including a substantial support package for Ukraine.
Stubb echoed Macron's sentiments on maintaining pressure on Moscow, describing the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war as a lengthy conflict that has resulted in strategic failures for Russian President Vladimir Putin. Stubb emphasized the importance of continuing military and economic support for Ukraine, commending France's leadership in pushing for energy-related restrictions and measures targeting Russian exports.
The discussions between Macron and Stubb also covered Arctic security concerns, with both leaders advocating for a strengthened defense posture in the region due to Russian military activities and China's economic presence. Macron expressed France's readiness to support NATO's vigilance in the Arctic and called for a revision of the EU's Arctic strategy.
Additionally, the two presidents announced their intention to enhance bilateral cooperation in defense, technology, nuclear energy, and critical raw materials, and confirmed plans to initiate talks on a strategic partnership agreement between France and Finland.
