Kuala Lumpur: Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced on Wednesday that Malaysia will construct a school, hospital, and mosque in Gaza, a region devastated by conflict since October 2023.

According to Anadolu Agency, the announcement from Anwar Ibrahim comes during the second week of a ceasefire that began on January 19. The ceasefire follows a brutal period of violence that resulted in over 46,000 deaths and displaced more than two million Palestinians. Anwar emphasized the importance of recovery efforts in Gaza, stating on X, "The announcement of a ceasefire in Gaza after a brutal massacre should be welcomed with a plan for the recovery of Gaza."

The Prime Minister elaborated on Malaysia's commitment, saying, "Malaysia will mobilize efforts to build a school, hospital, and mosque in Gaza to help alleviate the suffering endured by the Palestinian population." The ceasefire agreement, which took effect on January 19, temporarily halted the conflict that claimed the lives of over 47,300 Palestinians, predominantly women and children, and injured more than 111,000 since October 7, 2023.

The violence has resulted in widespread destruction and a severe humanitarian crisis, leaving more than 11,000 people missing and affecting many elderly and children. The situation has been described as one of the worst global humanitarian disasters ever. In response to the conflict, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants in November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Additionally, Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its actions in the enclave.
