Ankara: The Mecca Joint Defense Agreement could serve as a crucial starting point for ensuring regional stability and security, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas stated during a joint news conference with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara.
According to Anadolu Agency, Abbas highlighted the significance of the Mecca Agreement, expressing hope that it will defend the interests of the Muslim Ummah. He noted that his discussions with Erdogan were "very important and productive," focusing on regional developments and strengthening bilateral relations. Abbas emphasized that a just peace is achievable only by ending the occupation and establishing an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital. He underscored the importance of achieving this goal within the framework of international law and the Arab Peace Initiative.
Abbas expressed gratitude for Turkey's continued support for Palestinian independence and freedom. He mentioned a recent ceasefire in Gaza, facilitated by Turkey, Egypt, Qatar, and the US, while noting that humanitarian aid has yet to reach the enclave. "There can be no state without Gaza," Abbas asserted, calling for the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2803 and the restoration of legitimate Palestinian sovereignty in Gaza.
Further, Abbas stressed the need for political institutions and financial independence for a fully functioning Palestinian state. He criticized Israel for withholding approximately $6.5 billion belonging to the Palestinians and discussed the escalating tensions in the West Bank and Jerusalem. Abbas condemned terrorist acts by occupiers operating under the protection of the Israeli army and criticized attacks on holy sites of both Muslims and Christians.
Emphasizing the unity of the Palestinian state, Abbas declared, "We are one state and will remain one state," highlighting the importance of Palestinian unity and comprehensive national reconciliation. He reiterated the commitment to a national reform program and the political agenda of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).
Abbas also noted the significance of the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for November 28, stating that both legislative and presidential elections will take place. He expressed appreciation for Turkey's support, including humanitarian aid to Gaza, hosting Palestinian students, and providing medical treatment for patients and the wounded.
