Meta Begins Testing X-Style Community Notes for Facebook, Instagram

Meta: Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, has announced that it will begin testing community notes on its platforms. This initiative marks a shift from the previous third-party fact-checking program to a crowd-sourced approach, allowing users to add context to posts.

According to Anadolu Agency, Meta stated on its website, "We expect Community Notes to be less biased than the third-party fact-checking program it replaces because it allows more people with more perspectives to add context to posts." This transition to Community Notes was first announced in January, with the testing phase set to begin on March 18th in the United States.

Community Notes, similar to the program launched by X (formerly Twitter) in 2021, will enable users, known as contributors, to write and rate notes on content across Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. The goal is to correct misinformation or provide additional context to posts. If notes are rated as 'helpful' by a diverse group of contributors, they will be publicly displayed on the respective posts.

Meta revealed that 200,000 potential contributors have signed up for the program across its platforms in the US. The company plans to gradually and randomly admit users from the waitlist to test the writing and rating system before any notes are publicly available.
