Chisinau: Moldova is prepared to launch accession negotiations with the European Union on the first group of chapters concerning fundamental values after completing bilateral screening in five areas, Deputy Minister for European Integration Cristina Gherasimov said Monday.

According to Anadolu Agency, Gherasimov expressed appreciation for the support received from civil society, the business community, and the diaspora, emphasizing their active contributions to the process. "The efforts we make on our European path are primarily for the people," she stated. Judicial reforms remain a central focus in Moldova's European integration efforts. Gherasimov highlighted the importance of functional self-governing institutions and actions to eliminate corruption in the justice system, along with strengthening integrity among prosecutors and judges. Legislative changes to enable extended confiscation of assets are also part of the reform agenda.

Gherasimov noted that over two-thirds of Moldova's exports are directed to EU states. The country has joined the single euro payments area and is set to enter the Roaming Like at Home zone in 2026. Progress in energy diversification was cited as a measure to prevent its use as a pressure tool.

However, Gherasimov cautioned that Moldova's path towards European integration remains vulnerable, with upcoming parliamentary elections posing a critical test. "Protecting the electoral process against external influences and dirty financing is an absolute priority for us, and we need tools and support to ensure a free and fair election," she emphasized.

Moldova was granted EU candidate status in 2022 alongside Ukraine, with both countries aiming to formally start accession negotiations this year.
