Helsinki: Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen has underscored the necessity of maintaining international pressure on Russia, emphasizing that sanctions should remain in place even if the conflict in Ukraine concludes. She highlighted this stance during Finland's annual Ambassadors' Day gathering in Helsinki.

According to Anadolu Agency, Valtonen stated that a mere ceasefire or peace agreement is insufficient for lifting sanctions, advocating for a 'gradual and under strict conditions' approach to any sanction relief. She urged the European Union to intensify its pressure on Moscow and revealed that the bloc is preparing its 19th sanctions package, with Finland advocating for tariffs on Russian imports.

Valtonen reinforced Finland's commitment to providing military assistance to Ukraine and contributing to its long-term security guarantees. She also expressed that Ukraine is expected to join both the EU and NATO, contingent upon its efforts to combat corruption and implement governance reforms.

The Finnish Foreign Minister expressed support for US President Donald Trump's peace initiatives in Ukraine, highlighting the importance of ceasing hostilities and securing the return of prisoners of war and abducted children.

Regarding Russia, Valtonen commented on President Vladimir Putin's lack of genuine intent to make real concessions, noting his participation in negotiations without a willingness to relinquish his expansionist ambitions. She also cautioned that Russia's linkage of potential peace talks to preventing Ukraine from joining NATO undermines Ukraine's sovereignty.
