Mumbai: Over 300 people have been killed in landslides and flooding in northern India since mid-June as torrential rains continue to batter Indian states, throwing day-to-day life out of gear.

According to Anadolu Agency, the western state of Maharashtra has been particularly affected, with rains crippling daily life and impacting flight and train services. In Mumbai, the financial capital of the country, authorities closed all government and semi-government offices for a day due to the heavy rainfall. The Indian weather department issued a red alert for 'extremely heavy rainfall' in Mumbai and its suburbs on Tuesday.

The Indian Army reported its involvement in flood relief operations in Maharashtra's Nanded district, where four out of five missing persons have been found deceased, while one individual remains untraced.

Monsoon rains have also caused destruction in northern India, with several areas experiencing cloudbursts. In Himachal Pradesh, the monsoon rains have resulted in a death toll of 268 as of Tuesday, according to an official statement released late Monday. Uttarakhand state has also suffered from devastating mudslides and flash floods, with several people still missing.

Heavy monsoon rains typically begin in India in June and last until September.
