New York:Naoero's President David Adeang announced the country's decision to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC) during the 81st UN General Assembly on Tuesday.

According to Anadolu Agency, President Adeang criticized the ICC as a multilateral institution of diminishing relevance. He confirmed that Naoero would revoke its membership and deposit its instrument of withdrawal with the Rome Statute's depository while still in New York.

This decision follows US President Donald Trump's earlier call for countries to withdraw from the ICC, made during his own address to the UN General Assembly. Historically, Naoero has aligned with the US in votes concerning Israel and Palestine, including opposing a 2025 resolution that endorsed a two-state solution.

In his speech, Adeang also emphasized Naoero's support for responsible seabed mineral development, warning that delays in international rule-making might lead countries to act independently. He called on the International Seabed Authority to complete the Mining Code swiftly.

Addressing UN reform, Adeang criticized the current structure of the Security Council as outdated and advocated for an expansion of both permanent and non-permanent membership. He also urged the World Bank to adopt a vulnerability-based approach, similar to the Asian Development Bank, when determining support eligibility.

Furthermore, Adeang called for the lifting of the embargo against Cuba and promoted dialogue that respects national sovereignty. The Pacific island nation recently changed its official name from Nauru to Naoero in July.
