Ankara:Israel's Central Elections Committee has fined Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for a second time, demanding the removal of a video from his personal social media accounts. The video, filmed at a military base, was deemed 'election propaganda.'
According to Anadolu Agency, committee chairman Supreme Court Justice Noam Sohlberg ordered Netanyahu to delete the video filmed at Tel Nof Air Base and pay legal costs of 2,500 shekels (approximately $821). The video was ruled a violation of election law as it utilized public resources, such as a military base and an Israeli Air Force aircraft.
Despite this, the ruling permitted Netanyahu to keep the video on his official accounts. He had posted the clip, featuring an Israeli Air Force aircraft, on September 29, warning of potential attacks on Israel ahead of the election.
The decision followed Sohlberg's acceptance of five petitions against Netanyahu related to the use of official speeches and military imagery for election purposes. One petition concerned a video of Netanyahu visiting a military position in southern Lebanon. Sohlberg noted that the edited clip emphasized government achievements while omitting parts about supporting soldiers.
Netanyahu was ordered to remove these posts and pay 29,000 shekels (about $9,000). Israel's Knesset election is set for October 27, with Netanyahu's Likud party facing a close contest against opposition parties.
Recent polls indicate no clear majority, with opposition parties projected to secure 52 seats and Netanyahu's coalition 51. Netanyahu has led the current government since December 2022 and is facing trial on corruption charges, which he denies. The International Criminal Court has also issued an arrest warrant for him over alleged war crimes in Gaza.
