Netanyahu Orders Military to Defend Druze in Syria’s Jaramana

Ankara: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has instructed the country's military to 'prepare to defend' the Druze inhabitants of Jaramana city near Syria's capital Damascus. According to Anadolu Agency, this development marks a new escalation by Netanyahu's government against Syria's new administration, which is demanding an end to the ongoing Israeli violations of its sovereignty. Jaramana, located approximately 60 kilometers (37.2 miles) from the Israeli border, is a city with a mix of Druze, Christians, and both Sunni and Shia Muslims. A statement from Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz's office claimed that Jaramana is 'currently under attack by the forces of the Syrian regime.' Katz warned that if the Syrian administration 'harms the Druze, it will be struck by us.' On Friday evening, the city experienced security tensions resulting in the death of a Syrian security officer by an armed militia linked to the former regime, known as "Jaramana Shield." Meanwhile, Rabie Munzer, a member of the Ja ramana Civil Action Group, rejected Israeli intervention, emphasizing the city's historical self-reliance and the Syrian social fabric. Following the downfall of Assad's regime, which had been in place since 1963, Ahmed al-Sharaa, appointed as Syria's new president, has tasked Mohammed Al-Bashir with forming a government to manage Syria's transitional period. Israel has since expanded its occupation in the Golan Heights, seizing the demilitarized buffer zone, in violation of a 1974 disengagement agreement. Israel's recent military actions in the Golan Heights, occupied since 1967, have faced condemnation from the UN and several Arab nations.
