New York City: New York City filed a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration over the abrupt withdrawal of $80 million in emergency funding intended for migrant assistance, according to court documents.

According to Anadolu Agency, the funds, which were disbursed on February 4, 2025, were clawed back one week later 'unlawfully' and without notice or explanation, the city alleges. The lawsuit argues that this move violates federal regulations and grant terms. The New York City Law Department has filed the lawsuit seeking a temporary restraining order, preliminary injunction, and permanent injunction to recover the funds and prevent similar actions in the future.

City officials claim that the federal government's actions undermine congressionally approved programs designed to support local governments in managing migrant crises. Mayor Eric Adams emphasized on the city's official website that the cost of managing an international humanitarian crisis should not fall on one city alone.

Muriel Goode-Trufant, the city's corporation counsel, stated that the Trump administration's actions were unjustified and violated legal obligations. This controversy follows accusations by Elon Musk and others that the city misused Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funds for 'luxury hotels' for migrants. However, city officials have denied these claims, insisting that the rates paid were reasonable and aligned with authorized programs.
