Wellington:New Zealand's top military commander has resigned after admitting to an inappropriate relationship. The issue has been referred to the inspector-general of defense.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, Air Marshal Tony Davies, who served as chief of defense, stated that his resignation was due to personal reasons stemming from past errors of judgment for which he is taking responsibility. These errors were contrary to the values of the Defense Force.
Davies explained that the situation involved an inappropriate relationship during his time in a position of unit command, expressing regret for not disclosing the matter when he had the opportunity.
New Zealand Defense Minister Paul Goldsmith confirmed the resignation of Davies and mentioned plans to recommend the acceptance of his resignation to Governor-General Cindy Kiro. Goldsmith noted that the decision was related to integrity issues that Davies had not previously disclosed, and both agreed that his position was no longer tenable.
The New Zealand Defense Force is preparing for the transition of responsibilities to the vice chief of the defense force, Rear Adm. Mat Williams, who will serve as the acting chief of the defense force.
