Saada: Sudan's Transitional Sovereignty Council Chairman Abdel Fattah al-Burhan stated that 'the joy of victory will not be complete until the rebellion is eliminated from every last part of the country.'
According to Anadolu Agency, his remarks came in a pre-recorded Eid al-Fitr address, aired by Sudan's state television. Burhan emphasized there would be no retreat from defeating and crushing the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, whom he accused of committing severe violations against the Sudanese people. He also expressed gratitude to the Sudanese people for their support of the armed forces, referring to them as 'the rightful owners of victory.'
The Sudanese army recently regained control of a significant marketplace in Omdurman, marking the first such achievement since the RSF seized the area in April 2023. The recapture of the Libya Market, a key RSF stronghold in western Omdurman, paves the way for the army to extend its control in the western parts of Omdurman, areas still under RSF command.
This military progress follows the army's recent successes in Khartoum and Bahri. Over the past two days, the army has achieved notable advancements, including full control of the capital and parts of surrounding regions. On Thursday, the army announced that it had successfully cleared the last RSF pockets in Khartoum State and regained control of the Khartoum Airport, security and military headquarters, and several districts in the eastern and southern parts of the capital for the first time since April 2023.
In recent weeks, the territorial control of the RSF has been rapidly diminishing in favor of the Sudanese army across several states, including Khartoum, Al-Jazira, White Nile, North Kordofan, Sennar, and Blue Nile. The army and RSF have been engaged in a war since April 2023, resulting in over 20,000 casualties and displacing 14 million people, according to the UN and local authorities. However, research from US universities estimates the death toll at approximately 130,000.
International and UN demands for an end to the war are intensifying, with warnings of an impending humanitarian catastrophe as millions face famine and death due to food shortages. The conflict has now spread to 13 of Sudan's 18 states.
