Kampala: A male nurse has succumbed to Ebola in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, as confirmed by the Health Ministry. An outbreak of the Sudan Ebola Virus Disease has been confirmed, according to Diana Atwine, the permanent secretary to the Health Ministry, during a news briefing.
According to Anadolu Agency, the Sudan Ebola virus is one of six identified species of the Ebola virus. The initial patient in this outbreak is a 32-year-old nurse from Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala. The patient exhibited symptoms including fever, chest pain, and breathing difficulties, eventually leading to unexplained bleeding over a period of five days. The nurse passed away on Wednesday at Mulago National Referral Hospital due to multi-organ failure, as stated by the ministry.
The ministry also reported that no other healthcare workers or patients on the ward have shown signs or symptoms of Ebola. However, 44 contacts have been identified in connection with the outbreak. Uganda last experienced an outbreak of the Sudan Ebola virus in late 2022, resulting in 55 fatalities and 143 cases.
Currently, there is no licensed vaccine available for the Sudan Ebola virus, as noted by the World Health Organization. Meanwhile, the Health Ministry of the Central African Republic has reported 12 suspected cases of Rift Valley fever. These cases have been identified in the northwestern sub-prefecture of Ngaoundaye, and health authorities are evaluating the situation to bolster their response efforts.
