Fiji: The Pacific Islands Forum has issued a call for robust global trade policies to assist small island nations in addressing the challenges posed by climate change.

According to Anadolu Agency, in a joint statement released after their meeting in Fiji, the trade ministers of the forum emphasized the necessity of regional solidarity amid global trade uncertainties. The statement highlighted the importance of forming genuine and lasting partnerships with global partners and expressed openness to engaging in constructive dialogue aimed at creating a sustainable and inclusive future for the Pacific region.

Pacific island nations face significant threats from rising sea levels, with certain areas projected to experience a steep increase in high-tide flooding by the 2050s. The forum's ministers urged members of the World Trade Organization (WTO) to recognize the crucial role trade can play in addressing environmental and climate change challenges, which are particularly pronounced in their region.

The ministers reaffirmed their commitment to an open, rules-based trading system and called on all partners to participate in constructive, respectful dialogue to foster a sustainable and inclusive future for the Pacific. This statement was issued in the aftermath of US President Donald Trump's announcement of new higher tariffs on various countries, which has disrupted markets and the existing trade order.
