Palestinian Factions Set for Preparatory Talks in Cairo

Cairo:Palestinian factions, including Fatah and Hamas, are set to commence preparatory discussions in Cairo on Wednesday. These talks are aimed at paving the way for a broader national dialogue to build political consensus, as announced by a Fatah spokesman.

According to Anadolu Agency, Abdel Fattah Dawla revealed that Islamic Jihad and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) will also participate in these initial meetings, which are expected to last up to two days. The broader talks could potentially resume on October 20, contingent on the outcomes of these preliminary discussions.

The primary focus of the meetings is on preparations for the upcoming wider dialogue and efforts to achieve consensus among Palestinian factions. Representing Fatah are Central Committee Secretary Jibril Rajoub and committee member Mohammad Shtayyeh, both of whom are anticipated to arrive in Cairo on Wednesday.

There has been no immediate response from the other factions regarding these developments. On Saturday, Rajoub noted that Fatah had engaged in two days of discussions in Cairo with Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and the PFLP as part of Egyptian-led efforts to secure a Palestinian national consensus.

These talks follow a decree issued by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Saturday, which schedules simultaneous presidential and legislative elections for September 11, 2027, replacing a previously planned legislative vote in November 2026. Fatah has expressed support for the decree, while Hamas has advocated for a comprehensive national dialogue to establish binding agreements on reorganizing Palestinian political institutions.
