Palestinian International Media Forum Tawasol Opens in Istanbul

Istanbul: The Palestinian International Media and Communication Forum Tawasol commenced in Istanbul on Saturday, with a mission to amplify the Palestinian narrative through both traditional and digital media channels. At the forum’s opening ceremony, Tawasol Secretary General Ahmed Al Sheikh highlighted the persistent struggles faced by Palestinians, stressing the importance of accurate representation of their plight.

According to Anadolu Agency, Al Sheikh elaborated on the severe challenges endured by Palestinians, such as food shortages, harsh winter conditions, and decades of oppression, which he termed “Israeli genocide.” Despite these adversities, he praised the resilience of the Palestinian people in their quest to uphold their rights. “We need to support the Palestinian cause with traditional and digital media. This is very important in a new era,” he stated, reaffirming the forum’s commitment to promoting the authentic Palestinian narrative.

The two-day event, themed “The Palestinian Narrative: A New Era,” aims to foster collaboration between Arab and global media to bolster support for the Palestinian cause. The 4th Palestinian International Media and Communication Forum has drawn approximately 750 participants, including media representatives and activists from around 30 countries.

Key sessions at the event focus on the history and development of Palestine, the media’s role in the Palestinian context, and the potential collapse of the Zionist narrative. Discussions also cover how Palestinian history is portrayed in media across regions like Asia, Africa, Europe, the Americas, and Latin America. The forum underscores the challenges faced by Palestinian journalists under Israeli occupation and the responsibilities of global and Arab media communities in advocating for Palestine.

Since October 7, 2023, Israeli military actions in Gaza have resulted in the deaths of over 200 journalists, highlighting the significant risks media professionals encounter while covering the conflict. Tawasol, an independent media initiative, is dedicated to fostering collaboration between Arab and international media to advance the Palestinian cause. Its activities include hosting media seminars, workshops, and consultations to enhance reporting on Palestinian issues.

Tawasol also conducts biannual online media campaigns to counter Israeli propaganda, involving influencers and activists in advocacy efforts for Palestine. Additionally, it offers professional media training to Palestinian journalists and activists worldwide, empowering them to effectively present the Palestinian perspective and influence public opinion.
