Paris:Paris police chief Patrice Faure has prohibited a pro-Palestinian demonstration that was planned for October 7, citing the potential for public disorder. The demonstration was scheduled to coincide with the third anniversary of the attacks in Israel on October 7, 2023.
According to Anadolu Agency, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez requested the ban, leading Faure to issue an order against the protest, which was to be held under the banner "against the genocide in Gaza and for respect for the ceasefire."
Faure expressed concerns about the demonstration's potential to trigger "significant risks of public disorder," referencing a "high terrorist threat" and the persistently high levels of antisemitic acts across France. He emphasized his responsibility to maintain public safety in light of these risks.
The conflict in Gaza, initiated by Israel three years ago, has resulted in over 74,000 deaths, numerous injuries, and extensive destruction of the enclave's infrastructure.
