Manila: The Philippines' Senate has extended the deadline for Vice President Sara Duterte to submit her response to the articles of impeachment filed against her. The new deadline is set for Monday, allowing Duterte additional time to address the charges, as reported by local media.

According to Anadolu Agency, the 10-day period initially given for Duterte to file her formal answer with the Senate was scheduled to conclude, as highlighted by the local English daily, Manila Times, on Sunday. Senate Secretary Jose Luis Montales issued an advisory stating that Duterte "may file her answer personally, through counsel, or via electronic mail."

The impeachment articles against Vice President Duterte encompass four major charges: misuse of public funds, unexplained wealth, bribery and corruption, and public threats. This marks the second time in two years that Duterte has been impeached by the lower house of the Philippines' parliament.

The impeachment case has now moved to the Senate, where a trial will determine whether Duterte will face conviction or acquittal. Despite the serious nature of the charges, the 47-year-old Duterte remains a leading figure and is considered a favorite for the 2028 presidential race.
