Manila: The Philippines Supreme Court has halted impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte, barring lawmakers from pursuing such actions for a year.
According to Anadolu Agency, the court's decision was based on the grounds of due process, effectively preventing any impeachment motions from being filed again until the specified period has passed. The legal move comes after Duterte, who is the daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte, faced impeachment on February 5 when more than two-thirds of the members of the House of Representatives signed a petition seeking her removal from office.
Duterte has been accused of misusing funds during her tenure as the head of the Department of Education. The impeachment motion had been pending in the Senate, the upper house of the Philippines' parliament, which holds the exclusive authority to try and adjudicate impeachment cases.
