Quezon City: Philippine police announced on Wednesday that they have filed criminal complaints against Vice President Sara Duterte and her security staff. The allegations involve attacking authorities and disobeying orders during altercations at the lower chamber of Congress and a government hospital.
According to Anadolu Agency, the Quezon City police have taken this action while a separate legal proceeding looms against Duterte. The vice president is accused of publicly threatening to kill President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., his wife Liza Araneta-Marcos, and House Speaker Martin Romualdez, should anything happen to her. The Manila Times reported that the complaints include charges of direct assault, disobedience, and grave coercion related to the incidents at the mentioned locations.
Duterte’s office has stated that it will respond to these complaints. Meanwhile, in a related development, presidential adviser Larry Gadon filed a petition with the Supreme Court on Wednesday. The petition aims to revoke Duterte
‘s bar license due to her assassination threats against the president and other officials.
The tensions have escalated as Duterte accused Romualdez, a cousin of President Marcos, of wanting her dead. She claims he views her as a significant threat to his aspirations for the 2028 presidential election. Despite running as allies in the 2022 elections, which secured them a six-year term, the alliance between Marcos and Duterte has been strained recently. This strain led to Duterte’s resignation from Marcos’ Cabinet, where she served as the education secretary.
