Pope Leo XIV Cancels Assisi Visit Following Medical Advice

Accra:Pope Leo XIV has canceled his planned visit to Assisi on October 27, following medical advice to continue his recovery from recent lung surgery, the Vatican announced on Friday.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, the cancellation is intended to aid Pope Leo XIV's recovery after undergoing thoracic surgery. The Holy See Press Office stated that the pope will not attend the "Unarmed and Disarming Peace" meeting in Assisi as planned. Instead, he will send a message to express his support and closeness to organizers, religious leaders, and other participants.

The Vatican emphasized Pope Leo XIV's belief in the importance of the "Spirit of Assisi" dialogue and the pursuit of peace in times of conflict. A medical update from the Vatican revealed that a follow-up chest X-ray indicated the pope's postoperative recovery is progressing well. Nevertheless, due to the short time since the surgery, doctors advised against the helicopter journey to Assisi as a precaution.

Pope Leo XIV underwent surgery at Rome's Gemelli Hospital on October 13 to remove a nodule from his lung. The 90-minute operation was deemed successful, with the lower lobe of his right lung removed using video-assisted surgery. A histological examination confirmed a diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma. The pope was discharged from the hospital on Saturday, and his engagements were canceled through October 20 to facilitate his recovery. His doctors have confirmed he will not require further treatment.
