President speaks with Greek PM, follows situation in buffer zone closely

Cyprus President, Nikos Christodoulides, held on Friday a telephone conversation with Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, as regards the attacks this morning against peacekeepers in the buffer zone near Pyla.

The Cyprus News Agency (CNA) has learned that a meeting was convened early in the morning under President Christodoulides as regards the incidents cause in the buffer zone by the occupation forces.

The meeting was attended by the Foreign Minister, the Director of the President's Diplomatic Office, the head of the Central Intelligence Service, the Government Spokesman, the Director of the President's Office and the Director of the President's Press Office.

Christodoulides is constantly being briefed about all developments and is in constant contact with all the parties involved, the Greek government, the EU High Representative Josep Borrell, the EU institutions, and the embassies of UN Security Council permanent members.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
