UN Rights Chief Warns Attacks on Journalists Threaten Global Freedom

Geneva: The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, has issued a stark warning about the increasing attacks on journalists across the globe, which he asserts are jeopardizing freedom, accountability, and democratic societies.

According to Anadolu Agency, Turk made these remarks in observance of World Press Freedom Day on Sunday. He emphasized that a free press is essential for a free and open society, playing a critical role in informing public debate, exposing abuses, and promoting transparency. Turk expressed concern that journalism is becoming increasingly perilous, citing the killing of at least 14 journalists this year, and noted that only about one in ten journalist killings over the past two decades has resulted in full accountability.

Turk underscored the dangers faced by journalists working in conflict areas, characterizing Israel's ongoing conflict in Gaza as particularly hazardous, with nearly 300 journalists reported killed since October 2023. He also highlighted the growing threats faced by journalists beyond war zones, including surveillance, legal intimidation, and online harassment, with women journalists being disproportionately affected.

Turk called for urgent measures to protect journalists, urging states to cease the persecution of the press, repeal restrictive laws, and ensure accountability for attacks. He also appealed to technology companies to take a stand against disinformation and online abuse, stressing that journalists need more support to preserve press freedom and uphold democratic values globally.
