President underlines EU’s crucial role in efforts to reach solution

The Cyprus problem is European, and, as such, the EU has a crucial role to play, President Christodoulides said Monday, receiving the credentials of the new Ambassador of France, Ms Clélia Chevrier Kolacko. He said that we aspire to a more active EU role in enabling and enhancing the work of the UN, at all stages, including in the ongoing efforts to break the deadlock and returning to the negotiating table, always under the auspices of the Good Offices of the UN-Secretary General. ''We are making every effort to this direction, with a view to ending the Turkish occupation and reunifying Cyprus'', he said. The President received also today the credentials of the Ambassadors of Holland Willem Wouter Plomp, Finland Päivi Peltokoski, Serbia Suzana Boškovic-Prodanovic and Qatar Yousef Sultan Laram. He referred to the efforts to further strengthen the bilateral relations with these countries and expressed his sincere gratitude for their support in the efforts to reunite Cyprus. Receiving the credentials of the Ambassador of Holland the President spoke of the two countries' unwavering respect and support of international law, democracy and peace and added that bilaterally and multilaterally, over the last years they have made important strides in our cooperation. Ambassador Plomp said both countries remain active supporters of Frontex, the European external borders agency and referred to the agreement to a Bilateral Annual Defense Program, noting that they look forward to further implementing this framework. To the Ambassador of Finland, the President said that faced with two wars in the European continent and its vicinity, like-minded countries need to continue working together with a view to reaching effective and practical solutions, based on fundamental democratic principles and respect of international law and human rights. The Ambassador presenting her credentials said she is looking forward to the EU Presidency of Cyprus in 2026 and added that Finland is committed to advocate united and resilient Europe. S he underlined that her country stands ready to work alongside Cyprus in confronting the challenges of climate change, enhancing security in Europe and wider, and promoting sustainable development. Receiving the credentials of the Ambassador of Serbia President Christodoulides reiterated Cyprus' consistent and firm support of Serbia's position on Kosovo and applaud Serbia's constructive engagement in the Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue, as well as its commitment and dedication to finding a durable solution to the Kosovo question The Ambassador said that Serbia is fully dedicated to finding a durable solution to the Kosovo and Metohija question within the framework of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244, through the dialogue facilitated by the EU between Belgrade and Pristina, with full respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of her country. Receiving the credentials of the Ambassador of Qatar the President noted that Qatar's role in mediating complex regional issues, such as its eff orts in facilitating dialogue and assisting with humanitarian efforts in conflict zones, has been indeed pivotal. These contributions, he noted, highlight Qatar's role as a bridge in the region, particularly in light of the potential ripple effects from ongoing conflicts and the destabilization they may cause. The Qatari Ambassador said that he wishes to do his best to contribute to the consolidation and strengthening of the relations of friendship and cooperation between the two countries by promoting high-level visits, increasing the volume of trade exchange, promoting tourism, culture, education, sports, technology, innovation and other areas of common interest. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results.
