Washington: Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen stated that pressuring to take over a "sovereign country" is "not acceptable" following an announcement by the US of a special envoy to the territory.
According to Anadolu Agency, Nielsen remarked that while the United States can increase security in the Arctic on Greenlandic territory, transitioning from cooperation to pressure for taking over a sovereign nation is unacceptable. He expressed these views during an interview with the daily Sermitsiaq.
Nielsen recalled that US Ambassador to Denmark Ken Howery had acknowledged during a recent visit that Greenland does not wish to become part of the US. However, Nielsen criticized the US for presenting conflicting messages regarding Greenland, referencing President Donald Trump's lack of communication about the envoy's appointment as a failure in dialogue.
Emphasizing the importance of trust between allies, Nielsen expressed hope for improved communication with the US. He mentioned that Greenland was not informed about the special envoy's role and learned from media reports that the envoy would support Trump's intentions to take over Greenland.
President Trump announced that Jeff Landry, the governor of Louisiana, will serve as Washington's special envoy to Greenland. Trump noted on his Truth Social platform that Landry understands Greenland's importance for US national security.
Greenland, an autonomous territory under Danish sovereignty, has strategic significance and vast mineral resources, attracting US interest. Trump has previously compared owning Greenland to a critical "real estate deal" essential for US economic security.
Denmark and Greenland have consistently rejected any proposals to sell the territory, reaffirming Danish sovereignty over the island.
